Car DIY: Changing a Flat Tyre like a Boss

3/21/2016

changing a flat tyre
Knowledge is power so in our Car DIY section of the blog we'll explain how to do a few things on your own car, starting off with the simple but annoying task of changing a flat tyre.

How to Change a Flat Tyre in 10 Simple Steps

  1. If you have one in the car, put on a hi-vis vest (I know, not very badass, but then neither is getting hit by a car)
  2. Find the jack, wheel brace and spare wheel (usually in the boot or strapped to the underside of the car)
  3. Check you're on level ground and in a safe place (i.e not about to get run over). If you're all good go ahead to the next step, if not you may need to call for back up
  4. Get out your spare wheel and check it's not flat or damaged in any way. If there is something wrong with the spare you'll need some help, if not carry on to step 5...
  5. Slacken wheel nuts on the flat tyre using your wheel brace (but do not completely remove wheel nuts yet)
  6. Jack up car on the sill. There's usually a strengthened section to use on the sill edge at both the front and back of sill(the "jacking points")
  7. Now you can remove all wheel nuts fully, making sure the wheel does not fall onto you in the process
  8. Fit spare wheel onto vehicle
  9. Put wheel nuts back on and tighten as much as possible with fingers
  10. Lower car back onto ground and finish tightening the bolts with wheel brace (if using wheel brace supplied with car tighten as much as you can and get them checked by someone with a torque wrench as soon as possible)
