Car DIY: How to Fit a Car Radio

5/9/2016

fitting a car radio
When you know nothing about cars even the smallest jobs can seem daunting. That's why I've started a Car DIY section on our blog to help enthusiasts learn more about their cars and show you a few simple things that practically anyone can do.
Fitting a new car radio is one of the easiest things you can do on your car. It should take you about 10 minutes at the most and it doesn't usually require any special tools beyond what's provided with your new radio.

How to Fit a Car Radio

  1. If you need to remove your old car radio first you'll need removal keys/prongs to release it. These prongs push into holes on the radio facia to release it. The ones that come with your new radio might work- if not they can be sourced easily and cheaply from eBay
  2. Next, unplug the old radio from the car loom and disconnect the arial lead
  3. Plug in your new ISO wiring harness connecter onto the car wiring loom (this is usually supplied with the new radio)
  4. Plug in the arial cable (you may need to buy an adapter to make it fit your car)
  5. Plug your new radio onto the ISO wiring harness connecter (again, sometimes you need to buy a car specific connecter)
  6. Slot your new radio into the hole. It should clip in and hold in position
  7. Put the removal tools for your new radio in a safe place

Troubleshooting

Radio not working: Check the ISO and radio are plugged in properly. Also check there's a fuse in the back of the new radio and that it's not blown
